“You can’t breathe, so you write.”

This is a portfolio of my written works over the years.

Short Stories

Are We There Yet?

“Are We There Yet?” is my short story entry to an online writing competition. The theme given was “summer”.

The Second Time Around

“The Second Time Around” is my final output in a Creative Writing course at UP Diliman, created after a series of lessons and workshops.

Need a Hug?

“Need a Hug?” is an entry to an online writing competition. The prompt was to write an epistolary, which was a first for me.

A & A

“A & A” is my first Taglish flash fiction piece. I wanted to challenge myself to write stories in Filipino and with a casual writing style.

Unrequited

“Unrequited” is a flash fiction piece I wrote for an online writing competition. The theme given was “blood”.

Personal Essays & Memoirs

To the bravest swimmer I know

“To the bravest swimmer I know” is a love letter I wrote to myself when I was eighteen.

On hiatus

“On hiatus” is my journal entry for an English Studies course. The prompt was: Why do we read, write, and tell each other stories?

Hush, little girl

“Hush, little girl” is my journal entry for an English Studies course. The prompt was: Write about your own coming-of-age. At what point did you realize that you were no longer a child? What realizations about adulthood did you have?

Films

I consider films my passion projects. Below are some of the films I wrote.

Andap: Strike of 1912 (2018)

“Andap: Strike of 1912” is the official entry of Marcelo H. del Pilar National High School-Senior High School to Cine Republica Film Festival 2018. I wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film. Andap creatively reenacts the strike of Bulacan High School students against a cruel American principal during the US colonial period.

Out of eight finalists, it bagged Second Best Film, People’s Choice Award, Best Production Design Award, and Best Musical Score Award. I was also nominated as Best Director and Best Screenplay Writer.

Eskwela de Pamana Trailer

“Eskwela de Pamana” is a discontinued documentary entry to Cineliksik. Nevertheless, I enjoyed scripting this trailer and assisting in its creation. This was our first attempt at employing the animation technique rotoscoping.

Beer Boys (2017)

“Beer Boys” is a short film submission to a Creative Writing course. I wrote the screenplay and assisted the director in filming. Beer Boys tells the story of four boys who — despite their contrasting personalities — bond over two things: alcohol and failed romances.

Shift (2017)

“Shift” is a short film submission to a Media and Information Literacy course. I wrote the screenplay and assisted the director in filming. The prompt given was “digital footprint”. Shift takes place in a world where “shifting” — that is, downloading identities of other people — is the new trend.

Articles

Aside from creative writing, I also have extensive experience in campus journalism. Below is my other Medium profile containing some of my feature and opinion pieces on local and international issues.

Writer, dreamer, storyteller. Melissa used to write to escape reality. Now, she weaponizes writing to confront and change it — for the better, hopefully.
